Wohl flämischer Meister: Allegories of Erudition during the Ottoman Wars

Wohl flämischer Meister active late 16th cent.

Allegories of Erudition during the Ottoman Wars

Lot-No. 426 | Proceeds: 4.800,00 €

Oil/canvas, 44 x 61 cm, up. le. coat of arms of Otto Krage (1611-1688) and his wife Anna Rosenkrantz-Krage (married 1645, +1688), some rest., relined. - As evidenced by the coat of arms the painting with its extraordinary concept could have been acquired by Otto Krage on occasion of his marriage in 1645. Some scholars in the centre are leading a disput over a problem of geography, accompanied by allegories of painting, alchemy and music with the Ottoman wars in the background. The only person turning to the spectator could be the orderer of the painting. He appears as an universally educated man who possibly was also active as military leader or diplomat. The fashion suggest that the painting was made towards the end of the 16th century. The column with Mary as well as the Ottoman wars point to a place in Austria or Upper Italy. The depiction probably appealed to Otto Krage as a widely travelled senior diplomat. - Provenance: Collection of Otto Krage (+1666), member of the privy council of Denmark; 1905 private collection possibly in Erfurt; private collection Schleswig-Holstein. -
