Oil/canvas/cardboard, 43 x 34 cm, on the reverse inscribed E.R.B., on the frame handwritten inventory no. 98 from Sanssouci, some rest. - The initials are those of Elisabeth Regina Borussiae (1801-1873), wife of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV. - Provenance: 1805 in the inventory of Sansscouci palace, Potsdam, with inv. no. 98; ca. 1923 bought by a Swedish art dealer; since ca. 1950 property of the same Swedish collector. - Italian painter of Spanish origin. R. was taught painting in the studio of F. Ribalta in Valencia. No later than 1612 he settled in Rome where he became member of the Accademia di San Luca in the following year. Fleeing his creditors he moved to Naples in 1616 and developed into one of the major figures of Italian baroque painting. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit.
