Munich, early 20th cent. Bronze with dark brown patina. Sign. 'MATTES' on the short side, at the bottom edge of the reverse side foundry mark ''GUSS V. A. BRANDSTETTER MÜNCHEN'. 45 x 50 x 23 cm. - From 1888-94 Hans von Stegmann was private lecturer for art history at the Munich University, from 1895-1909 he worked at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and 1909 -1914 he was director of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich. - Literature: See fig. in: Vgl. Education at the Kunstgewerbeschule Nuremberg (1890-1894), 1894 entry into the sculpture class of Wilhelm von Rümann at the Kgl. Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, 1907 own workshop in Munich. - Mattes and his famous contemporary Franz von Stuck were representants of the Symbolism. He then went to the religious sculptural art and created numerous works for churches in Munich, also he produced fountains, reliefs, war memorials, busts and nude figures.
