Central India, Narmada river. Grey-brown polished stone, on the facial side a large redbrown inclusion, on a tripod bronze base. The 'Shiva Lingam', also called 'Brahmanda egg' or 'world egg' is the abstract symbol of the Hindu god Shiva and is placed in a vertical position in every Shiva temple in India. The erect form is interpreted as the symbol of god's phallus while the redbrown lively inclusion is seen as its female counterpart. H. 20 cm, w. 1 cm, ca. 3400 g, bronze mount h. 6 cm. -
