Oil/wood, 54 x 72 cm, lo. ri. sign. JW Bilders. - Dutch landscape painter. B. was taught drawing by L. von Jonxis in Utrecht. He worked in different places before settling in Oosterbeek near Arnhem. In 1853 he became member of the Amsterdam academy, in 1858 he joined 'Arti et Amicitiae'. B. is among the best landscape painters of his time. Overcoming the romantic tradition of landscape painting he is considered to be a predecessor of the Hague painting school. It's main exponent W. Mesdag was one of B.'s pupils.
