Oil/canvas, 45,5 x 28 cm, lo. ri. sign. N. Diaz, min. rest. - Provenance: Moeller, Copenhagen; Oskar Saller, Berlin, 1941, seized from his protperty; German art market; restituted to the heirs of Oskar Saller; Berlin private collection. - French landscape painter, on of the main exponents of the School of Barbizon. Already as a child D. lost both parents, soon after one of his legs was amputated as a result of a snake's bite. D. worked as painter in a porcellain factory since 1823 where he met J. Dupré. Since 1825 he was taught painting in the studio of F. Souchon. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon since 1831. D. admired Delacroix, but also the French art of the 18th century; his own works are romantic a. phantastic as well as realistic at the same time. Since 1837 he developed into the most outstanding master of the School of Barbizon besides C. Corot a. C. Troyon. D. was much admired by younger artist like P. Cézianne, C. Monet a. A. Renoir. Today he is considered to be one of the most important landscape painters of the 19th century.
