France, dat. 1842. Bronze, partially gilded. Sign. 'FRATIN' and dat. '1842'. Min. rep. - 4 dolphins are carrying a shell with a trophy-shaped oil lamp. The body with rich vegetable relief an four bears sitting on the top. The shaft with wine leaves, on the nozzle 4 little bears. - Fratin was one of the earliest French sculptors to portray animals in bronze. He studied sculpture under Pioche in Metz, then moved to Paris to study under Théodore Géricault. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831-1842 and 1850-1862, as well as at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. He died at Le Raincy (Seine-Saint-Denis) and is buried in Montmartre Cemetery.
