Watercolour over pencil/cardboard, 38,5 x 17,5 cm, lo. le. cyrillic sign. I. Repin, framed under glass. - Russian painter of international standing, the most important exponent of realism in Russia whom Russian art owes its recognition in the West. R. was trained as icon painter a. studied thereafter at the St. Petersburg academy. He was granted a scholarship with which he travelled West Europe 1871/72. The same year he joined the artist's group Peredvishniki. In 1892 he became professor at the St. Petersburg academy. Although he preferred Russian subjcet matters his importance was more and more recognised also in the West; in 1901 he was made chevalier of the French legion d'honeur. - Mus.: Moskau (Tretjakow-Gal., Russ.
