A pitcher 'Cavalier et cheval'

Lot-No. 519

Proceeds : 8.700 €

1952. Beige-colored body with polychrome painting and incised decoration, the interior coated with a translucent glaze. The right side of the vessel is filled by the body of the horse, rotating to the left we find its cavalier, beside them a bright green tree and the handle forms the blue sky above them. Embossed and labelled 'Edition Picasso Madoura', num. '89/300'. H. 20,5 cm. - The knight on horseback is a recurring character in Picasso's drawings of the early 1950s. His inclination towards the man on horseback continued even in the bull ring, where he is said to have had a fondness for the picador over the more celebrated matador, another character who appears throughout his ceramic works. For the design see: Ramiè, Picasso Catalogue de l'oeuvre céramique édité 1947-1971, Madoura 1988, p. 77, nr. 138.
