Oil/cardboard, 17 x 24,5 cm, lo. le. sign. O v Faber du Faur. - German battle painter from a family of artists. F. started on a military career but at the same time studied painting. In 1851 he was in the studio of A. von Kotzebue in Munich, 1852-53 he was taught by A. Yonn in Paris, thereafter he studied at the Stuttgart academy. In 1867 he quit military service in favour of painting a. studied again, this time until 1874 at the academy Munich under K. Th. von Piloty. After a trip to Morocco he included oriental subjects. - Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Munich (Neue Pinakothek), Cologne (Wallraf-Richartz-Mus.) a. others. - Lit.: Saur, Boetticher, Thieme-Becker, Bénézit.
