Oil/canvas, 80 x 190 cm, lo. ri. sign. Fritz Schulz 1869, min. rest. Original frame with date of the victory 29.6.1864 in a laurel cartouche. - After defeating the Danish army at the Dybböl fort on April 18th 1864 and thus deciding the Second Schleswig war the Prussian troops used the fort to bomb the city of Sonderborg on the island Alsen. The managed to seize the Island on June 29th 1864. This German victory is considered to be an important step on the way to the unified German Reich 1871. Several German painters took part in the Second Schleswig War. Schulz depicts the German officers on an elevated position as masters of the situation. The out-dated Danish canons cannot reach them, their projectiles fall into the Alssund. - German battle painter. S. was pupil of H.
