Meissen, mid 18th cent. At both sides a large flower bouquet. 'AR' mark. Neck and shoulder prof. rest. H. 50 cm. - The 'A(ugustus)-R(ex)-mark' refers to August the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, who was the leading patron of European porcelain. Under his reign the Meissen porcelain was invented by Boettger and Tschirnhaus and the first European porcelain manufactory was established in 1710. The AR-mark was used from the beginning and even after August's death it labelled pieces, which were exclusively reserved for royal use (see: Walcha, Meissner Porzellan, Dresden 1979, p. 499). According to Meissen scholars it is also possible that 'AR'-pieces in white porcelain were later decorated, around the middle of the 18th cent.
