A very rare figural group 'The loving shepherd's couple'
Johann Joachim Kaendler (Fischbach/Sachsen 1706 - Meißen 1775)
Lot-No. 699
Meissen, around 1745. Design from 1738. Seated couple in romantic and loving pose. On her lap a lamb. Next to him a small dog as a symbol of faitfullness. Faint crossed swords mark at the bottom. Prof. rest. H. 16 cm. - This group does perfectly reflect the artistic transfer of certain motifs during the 18th cent. Kaendler was most likely inspired by a well-known engraving of Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772), who himself worked after models by Boucher and Watteau. In Antoine Watteau's painting 'Le Dénicheur de Moineaux' (1710/12) the overall composition of the figures and the romantic atmosphere is already outlined. Lit.: Menzhausen/Karpinski, In Porzellan verzaubert, Basel 1993, p. 149.
