Lot Nr. 465
KPM/Berlin, middle of 19th cent. Massive ancient shape on a base with naturalistic handles and rich gold decoration. At the front a rectangular reserve with fine painting on a turquoise underground, showing the Neues Palais (New Palace) in Potsdam. Sceptre- and Pfennig-mark. Min. prof. rest., mounting slightly loose. H. 43,5 cm. - The vase combines an Antique shape with a Prussian veduta. In this connection it recalls the important topographical Berlin-vases of the 1st half of the 19th cent. These vases show views on Prussian palaces and Berlin streets. The present motif is based on Carl Daniel Freydanck (See: Baer, Carl Daniel Freydanck 1811-1887, Ein Vedutenmaler der KPM, Berlin 1987). The same painting is on another showpiece vase, which was given to Queen Victoria"s doctor as a present by Prince Friedrich of Prussia and later Kaiser Friedrich III. (See: Ostergard [Hg.], Along the Royal Road: Berlin and Potsdam in KPM Porcelain and Painting 1815-1848, New York 1993, pp. 202f.) Furthermore the depiction of this last important architecture of Frederic the Great in the parc of Sanssouci (built 1763-69) demonstrates the glorification of the legendary Prussian king in the 19th cent.
